Things i Like: Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Co.

I collect and never finish a lot of notebooks. Maybe I’m a hoarder. l like ‘em. I’m not sure why, but I don’t see any romanticism in button mashing on a laptop; it’s not beautiful. It’s different than scribbling in a 1956 cornfield memo book found at an estate sale somewhere in Nebraska. I like the notion of creating on top of what’s already existing. It’s not rewriting, but recycling history.

Aaron Draplin is an all-american graphic design lumberjack.

Things I Read: The Coolhunt
I should have been studying for my midterms last week, but instead took a little independent study vacation to learn about the concepts and origins of cool. This chart chronicles the progression of cool by culture. I want to share one of my favorite articles. It’s “The Coolhunt” by Malcolm Gladwell from a 1997 edition The New Yorker. It’s super interesting. He outlines an abstract definition in three rules.
1. The quicker the chase, the quicker the flight
2. Cool can’t be manufactured out of thin air
3. You have to be one to know one
